We kindly invite you to our next Zoom seminar. Michał P. Garapich (Roehampton University), Elżbieta Mirga-Wójtowicz (Pedagogical University of Cracow) and Monika Szewczyk (Jagiellonian University) will speak about past, present and future of Roma in Cracow. Meeting will be moderated by Konrad Pędziwiatr and Dobrosława Wiktor-Mach.
The seminar will be devoted to the latest MMO report on the Roma community in Cracow. Among other things, the methodological and ethical assumptions of the research on the basis of which the report was prepared will be presented, indicating the need for a more participatory approach to research on ethnic minorities in order to create specific urban policies. The report covers briefly the recent history of Roma in Cracow, and then discusses issues related to education, health, the functioning of Roma organizations and leadership structures, and the challenges facing Roma culture and language. The report ends with a series of recommendations for city authorities. In the context of recommendations, it also returns to the ethical and methodological issues in research directly applicable by local government authorities and the status of such research. The report suggests that it is important to ask questions not only about “how” to research using which methods, but above all “why” and under what conditions people being the subject of study interact with researchers. These questions are of particular importance in the context of drastic class inequalities and lack of trust between minorities and the majority society.
Seminar will be held in English.
