The upcoming Muliticulturalism and Migration Observatory (MMO)’s seminar, just a few days before the inauguration of the new academic year, will focus on the mobility and immobility of international students during the pandemic. In the introductory part we shall paint a larger picture of the current situation of international students who have been particularly affected by the halted transnational mobility and border closures, and then move to shed light on the situation of international students in Krakow. Our invited speakers Ewa Krzaklewska and Karolina Czerska-Shaw will present key findings from their research on (Im)mobility of international students in Krakow in times of COVID-19. On the basis of their research data, collected inter alia through five focus groups and 7 in-depth individual interviews carried out between March-May 2020, they will try assess the impact of the pandemic on foreign students in Krakow who build their education, professional careers but also identity projects on mobility. Janusz Mucha will comment on the findings of this research in light of his and Konrad Pędziwiatr’s analysis of the situation of international students in Krakow/Poland before the coronavirus pandemic. David Cairns from the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology at the University Institute of Lisbon will also comment on the findings of the research in Krakow and present finding of his team research on the seminar subject carried out in Portugal. We warmly invite international students based in Poland/Portugal as well as in other parts of the world to join our discussion and shed light on their experience of life/studies during the last half year.
